Great Balls of Fire- An Illustrated History of Sex in Science Fiction, by Harry Harrison
Great Balls of Fire- An Illustrated History of Sex in Science Fiction, by Harry Harrison. 1977 softcover. 118 pages, very nice condition.
This profusely illustrated book is covers the history of sex in science fiction, with a focus on the covers and accompanying artwork. The late Harry Harrison (1925 - 2012) was a prolific science fiction writer who got his start as a graphic artist. He discusses the scantily-clad-women-menaced-by-inhuman-monsters illustrations that graced the classic vintage science fiction book and magazine covers, and discusses the contrasting rather chasete contents of the stories. It wasn’t until later, and the publication of the books like the 1952 Philip Jose Farmer novella “The Lovers,” that sci-fi writing began to approach the carnality of those illustrations. A very cool book.
