From the creators of Star Trek…This is a novelization of Gene Roddenberry's made-for-television sci-fi drama film about an android (portrayed by Robert Foxworth) with incomplete memory tapes who is searching for his creator and his purpose. Gene Roddenberry's son, Rod, has confirmed that the Questor android was an inspiration for the character of Data, from Roddenberry's later Star Trek: The Next Generation.

D.C. Fontana (1939 –2019) was an American television script writer and story editor, best known for her work on the original Star Trek series and several Western television series. She adopted the gender-blind pen name D.C. Fontana for her writing, to prevent her pitches being prejudged on the basis of her gender, as she was one of the few female writers at NBC at the time. Under Roddenberry, Fontana worked as a story editor on Star Trek, working on the show from the start of the development, and eventually writing full episodes. She has the distinction of being one of the few people to have worked on Star Trek: The Original Series, as well as Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. During the 1970s and early 1980s, she also worked on Logan's Run, The Fantastic Journey, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.
