The Unknown Paintings of Kay Nielsen, by David Larkin. 1977 first edition softcover. 69 pages, nice condition.

Kay Rasmus Nielsen (1886 – 1957) was a Danish illustrator who was popular in the early 20th century, the Golden Age of Illustration which lasted from when Daniel Vierge and other pioneers developed printing technology to the point that drawings and paintings could be reproduced with reasonable facility. Nielsen is also known for his collaborations with Disney for whom he contributed many story sketches and illustrations, not least for Fantasia.

Many years ago Kay Nielsen created this marvelous collection to illustrate a new translation of "A Thousand and One Nights." They were never published, so they were carefully put away against the time when they would be used and appreciated. Since then this legacy has been held in trust by an undying faith and a remarkable friendship. Following the publication of the first Peacock volume on Kay Nielsen this faith has been rewarded. And now, after long years in the dark, these beautiful paintings have finally been brought into the light.

I have said repeatedly that If David Larkin has his name on an art book, you know the work inside will be amazing, important, and very worthwhile.
