Dorothea Puente (1929 - 2011) was an American convicted serial killer. She had a tumultuous life. Her mother was a sex worker, and her criminal record includes forgery, operating a brothel, and grand theft. In the 1980s, she ran a boarding house in Sacramento, California, and murdered various elderly and mentally disabled boarders before cashing their Social Security checks. Newspapers dubbed Puente the "Death House Landlady." Her total body count reached nine murders (with more suspected), seven of which were found buried in her backyard garden. She was caught in 1988 and ultimately convicted of three murders with the jury hung on the other six cases. Puente was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, and incarcerated at Central California Women's Facility (CCWF) in Chowchilla, California. She died of natural causes in prison, at the age of 82.
