“The journey…the pack heroics continue.” Again, this is what old people do when they retire…they pretend their dogs can write and create fictional worlds for them to live in. As far as I can tell, Tomi, the dog, is a real dog but was probably not a working fire dog. Alan Louis Krugel went through some personal tragedy, himself, and took in various rescue dogs, rehabilitating them with the help of dog guru, Caesar Millan. Somewhere along the line, he must have read Call of the Wild and thought making up stories for his dogs was a good idea. The K-9 Chronicles: Book Two is the second in a projected series of five books telling the stories of former police dogs…though I think they only released two and then gave up…or died…or completely lost his mind…I don’t know. In this one, Tomi goes to NY to help rescue folks during the 9/11 tragedy. It’s made even more strange by the odd and questionable illustrations throughout provided by Chrissy Crum & Barbara A. Fowlkes. Their artistic contributions help take this one completely over the top and I wholeheartedly commend them.

From the inside front cover: “We saw a shiny piece of metal leaning against some rubble as we passed by what used to be the front of the building. Maggie and I stopped to look at our reflections. We both weren't dark anymore-my head had streaks all over it. I was sure it was the blood I had tasted in my mouth from before. We both had cuts on our paws and legs. I kept looking into that shiny piece of metal to see if maybe Kate was in it too. I felt a sudden sickness pass into my body-it was choking me. I dropped my Kong, gagged, and threw up. Maggie licked the side of my head and then sat down next to me and pressed her chin hard onto the middle of my back.”
