Joel Rothberg (1943 - 2026?) was a prolific Los Angeles artist whose work spans decades in the industry. Known for his etchings, drawings, collage work, and photography, He gained a bit of notoriety from a brilliant 1960s woodcut edition of Edgar Rice Burrough’s classic adventure “A Princess of Mars.” Influenced by a diverse group of dark masters, like Durer, Goya, and Giger, his work consistently has a beautiful darker fantasy aesthetic.
“The World of Joel” is his self-published two-volume book set, featuring his art, poems, photographs, and commentary. This is an incredible overview of a semi-obscure artist whose work deserves much wider recognition.
